Overview

Ours is a “cut flower” generation, cautions Elton Trueblood. His well-chosen metaphor aptly describes the present religious climate. Christianity is waning partly because it has lost its serious sense of history. The real tragedy of the church’s condition is that only those values can abide that are rooted deep in the soil of the past when truth was “once for all delivered to the saints.” And that truth has been handed down from generation to generation, sometimes pure, sometimes perverted. Thus the men of the past who have led the church to where it is today still speak to us, if only we will listen. The theme of this volume emphasizes the need to listen carefully to the men of the past. As the author of Hebrews exhorts, “Remember them that had the rule over you, men that spoke unto you the Word of God; and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7). But we must likewise listen critically because “there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers who shall secretly bring in destructive heresies” (2 Peter 2:1).
