“We can see then why Uzzah had to die. He had ignored God’s dire warnings about the handling of holy things. He thought he was helping God. He used his intelligence and so steadied the ark to stop it from falling to the ground. In other words, he put his own reasoning before the teaching of God’s word. When anyone does this they are in danger. One of the reasons that the church is so weak today is that human thinking has been given a higher status than God’s word. People reason, ‘Miracles can’t happen, so there must be some mistakes in the Bible manuscripts.’ They want to elevate human thinking to a higher plane than the teaching of God’s word.” (Page 17)

“Since the death of Saul and Jonathan various children of Saul had tried to become king but none had succeeded because God had already chosen David to be king over the land. We might think we know what is best for us and our friends but God’s plan and purpose for our lives is what matters more than anything else. We should all be seeking to live out God’s purposes in our lives.” (Page 7)

“t is clear from this account that Shimei had ceased his defiant conduct.” (Page 117)

“We can be careful where we put our eyes. The psalmist prayed, ‘Turn my eyes away from worthless things’ (Psalm 119:37)” (Page 65)

“the Lord often reminds us to look back and remember all the wonderful ways that the Lord has led us.” (Page 39)

Michael Bentley treats the life of David in a simple, straightforward fashion, never losing sight throughout of the practical significance he has for us, and constantly holding before us David’s greater Son, the Lord Jesus. A very good and satisfying book!
