Overview

The end times have captivated the imaginations of Christians throughout the centuries. Significant portions of Scripture are devoted to Christ’s return, and countless theological works have been written on death, heaven and hell, the apocalypse, and other eschatological topics. This volume adds an important voice to the volumes of literature already written on the subject. Pohle writes lengthy chapters on death, heaven, hell, purgatory, along with the resurrection and the last judgment.

“that the knowledge of God is the essence of beatitude, while the love of God is its form and goal.” (Page 30)

“The Catholic Church, on the contrary, holds as an article of faith that there are among the Blessed various degrees of happiness, in proportion to merit.” (Pages 40–41)

“Purgatory may therefore be defined as a state of temporary punishment for those who, departing this life in the grace of God, are not entirely free from venial sins or have not yet fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.” (Page 77)

“The essential point in the Catholic dogma of the Particular Judgment is that the soul becomes aware of God’s final decision immediately after death. In the General Judgment the emphasis rests rather upon the sentence as such. The Particular Judgment is not necessarily a formal sentence.” (Page 18)

“a) There is a threefold life (physical, spiritual, and eternal), and hence there must be a threefold death.” (Page 5)
