Overview

In Exodus we see Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and journey toward the promised land. In Leviticus we see the laws of worship and priesthood given. The way of approach to God and the way of abiding with God are also seen. The books of Numbers and Deuteronomy review the history and wanderings of Israel prior to entering the promised land. Finally, in Joshua, we witness the conquest of Canaan as Israel begins to claim the inheritance promised to Abraham. (30 Lessons)

“In brief, the Old Testament is an evolution, not a revelation. It is an evolution of the Hebrew mind, not a revelation of the divine mind of God.” (Volume 1, Page 2)

“In Israel’s case, the hard labor and unceasing toil which made their lives bitter (verse 14) was needed to wean their hearts and minds from the delights of Egypt, thus making them content to leave it. God also prepared them for the severe life of the wilderness journey, conditioning them for endurance.” (Volume 1, Page 12)

“Because this is the birth chapter of Israel as a nation, the first thing announced is the change of the year. The month of the Passover was to be the first month in the new year for this people whom God was about to deliver from the bondage of Egypt. Later the Jews had a two-fold computation of the year—the ecclesiastical year and the civil year. Abib or Nisan was the month in which they observed this festival in honor of God. According to Josephus, the Jewish historian, for the civil year they preserved the original order of the months for buying, selling, and other ordinary affairs.” (Volume 1, Pages 39–40)

“‘If you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant’ is the keynote to the Mosaic legislation of the covenant made at Sinai. It precedes all law and ritual. It is the keynote that runs throughout the Old Testament. It is interesting to know that the Hebrew word ‘to hear’ means also ‘to obey.’ God does not make a covenant with the unwilling, and this is true under law as it is also under the covenant of grace.” (Volume 1, Page 70)

“The journey through the wilderness is a picture of the Christian’s journey through life: unsurrendered, murmuring, stumbling, wandering, longing for the things left behind, dissatisfied and powerless.” (Volume 1, Page 1)
