Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was born in Graaff Reinet, South Africa, to Dutch missionary parents. Educated at King’s College, Aberdeen, he then studied theology at the University of Utrecht. Andrew and his older brother John were ordained in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1848. Murray pastored South African churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. A champion of missionary work, he founded the South African General Mission in 1889. That ministry continued to grow, and today it is part of the SIM (Serving in Mission) organization.
A prolific author and lecturer, Murray authored over 200 books during his lifetime, and he was invited to speak at churches and conferences all over the world. Married for over 60 years and the father of eight children, Murray passed away in January 1917.
“Whether by His own acts or whether afterwards by the commands which He left for His disciples, does He not show us clearly that the preaching of the Gospel and the healing of the sick went together in the salvation which He came to bring? Both are given as evident proof of His mission as the Messiah; ‘The blind receive their sight and the lame walk … and the poor have the Gospel preached to them’ (Matt. 11:5). Jesus, who took upon Him the soul and body of man, delivers both in equal measure from the consequences of sin.” (Page 8)
“The entire Scriptures declare that these graces will be granted according to the measure of the Spirit and of faith.” (Page 16)
“Once having placed your foot firmly on the immoveable rock of God’s own Word, and having prayed the Lord to manifest His almightiness in your body because you are one of the members of His Body, and the temple of the Holy Ghost, persevere in believing in Him with the firm assurance that He has undertaken for you, that He has made Himself responsible for your body, and that His healing virtue will come to glorify Him in you.” (Page 43)
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, which … forgiveth all thine iniquities, which healeth all thy diseases’ (Psa. 103:3” (Page 7)
“The inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity” (Pages 7–8)
