Overview

Christians can’t be afflicted by demons . . . or can they? A groundbreaking work on the topic, Unger reveals Biblical principals that refute this thinking and rattles the cages of Christians who believe they are exempt from demonic attacks. Faithful followers of God aren’t merely susceptible to demonic attacks, but are likely targets. We fight a spiritual war against an enemy whose power we don’t typically understand, but being aware and alert can empower us for the imminent attacks. With wisdom and urgency, this book delivers crucial answers, not sensationalism—helping us to realize not only who and what we are up against, but that through Christ, we can overcome. Written over 30 years ago, the wisdom revealed in this book is even more applicable in today’s culture.

“In these sinister spirit personalities, humanity, especially redeemed humanity, has an implacable enemy. This foe is dedicated to alienate man from God and to keep him from Christ’s saving grace. When men do believe the gospel, Satan exerts every effort to turn them away from God’s will. He knows that once they are saved they are beyond his power insofar as their position before God and their eternal destiny are concerned. So he determines to do them as much damage as he can, seeking to ruin their Christian life and testimony for God.” (Page 14)

“Demon influence is the action of demonic powers working to corrupt a person. It may be of various degrees of severity, depending on the resistance the believer offers the satanic onslaughts (cf. James 4:7). If he fails to ‘stand against the wiles of the devil’ (Ephesians 6:11) and yields to this pressure, the enemy takes all the territory allowed him. Satanic forces operate upon this principle: ‘We go as far as we are permitted to go.’” (Page 56)

“Satan always knows his foes. He is thoroughly acquainted with them and is quite aware of those who fall to his strategies and are consequently comparatively harmless. He also knows those who recognize and count on their position in Christ and who find and fulfill God’s will for their lives. These saints are what the devil fears most, for they constitute the deadliest threat to his plans and ambitions.” (Page 18)

“distinguish carefully between the believer’s position before God and his experience of that position.” (Page 80)

“Sainthood, as God sees it, is based on position, not experience.” (Page 36)

Most Christians at least acknowledge the existence of demons, especially since they are portrayed as real in the New Testament, no doubt about it. Many assume the Christian believer is more or less automatically protected against demonic influence or attack. So the question becomes, can demons influence Christians? And, if so, how much? Possession? This book answers those questions and much more in no nonsense, straight-forward information, from the Bible and the personal experiences of believers—quite a few stories, all interesting, are included through the text.
