Overview

This book contains sermonettes from a verse selected from the Scripture reading of each day. The sermonette devotionals in this book are not "feel-good" sentimentalism, but they are expository studies of the Scriptures. They are generally outlined and alliterated in the typical writing style of the author. While the sermonettes are primarily intended to be instructional and inspirational for one's daily Bible reading, they are also helpful as sermon starters and aids for those giving a devotional. A valuable index of texts is located at the end of this book.

“Someone has said that great doors swing on small hinges. Divine providence often works that way; for great changes in one’s life can occur by some seemingly small incident such as a phone call, a timely letter, the meeting of someone in a store or church or other place (such as a well in our text). Yet these small incidents can completely change one’s life. They may lead to a marriage, as it did in today’s Bible reading, or a needed job or an important career change. The world calls these incidents ‘luck’ or ‘chance.’ But God’s people know better, for they know them as Divine providence.” (Page 8)

“God is not limited by big problems but by small prayers.” (Page 177)

“Excuses. ‘If it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord.’” (Page 78)

“God had told Moses to follow the Divine commands when building the Tabernacle. And the workers had done just that. ‘As the Lord commanded’ is the criteria by which everything will be judged in heaven. When God looks over our service, it will not be examined for how famous we were but how faithful we were to do as He commanded. We may impress the crowds, but what counts with God is if we have conformed to His commands.” (Page 31)

“This reminds us that duty is not necessarily easy to do. You will not do well in doing your duty if you only do the things that are easy to do.” (Page 20)
