Overview

In this volume, noted historian Chedomil Mijatovich presents an intriguing account of the fall of the Byzantine Empire during the conquest of the Turks in 1453. Constantinople was one of the most significant cities in the medieval world. As Mijatovich writes in the preface, “[I]ndeed, from the time of Constantine the Great to the time when the dawn of Renaissance aroused Italy to her noble task, Constantinople was the capital of Christian civilization. Its place in the history of the world has been always a most remarkable one—Rome being the only city which can successfully bear comparison with it.” Mijatovich begins with the background and causes that contributed to the rise of the Ottoman Empire which would eventually overtake Constantinople. His account discusses the events on the eve of the fall, and the last days and hours of the siege from first-hand diaries.

The value of this book is that it was written BEFIORE World War I and II and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The vivid detail of the writer's style combined with researched and documented original sources, makes this content accessible to someone at the beginner level of church history. The conditions facing Byzantium during the mid-1400's are eerily similar to where Western Christianity is today! Highly recommend.
