Overview

Gary Carr provides a brief survey of the basic elements of sermon preparation and delivery. Carr discusses other issues related to preaching, like the preacher’s character, humor, logic, mannerisms, and speech.

Top Highlights

“And the next area of analysis would be the rhetorical analysis. And that is focusing not so much on the audience, not so much on the text, but really on the art of how you are communicating. What strategies are you using to achieve the goal of communicating this biblical truth?” (source)

“The next thing to think about is a message-centered analysis, and that is: Is the message that you hear or that you speak, is it really faithful to the text that you’re presenting? Is the message correctly related to our world? Sometimes you may hear lengthy messages about how things were 2,000 years ago, and that’s all important and helpful. But really, as you look at the message, how is it related to our world today, to our contemporary culture, to our urban culture, to the locality of your congregation, of your audience?” (source)

“First is the sense of call. If you are called to preach, then you have an inner conviction that this is something you must do.” (source)

“God preparing the preacher is as important as God preparing the message. And so I can’t emphasize enough that in being a better preacher, you really need to focus especially on your own character, at being a better proclaimer, and falling in love with God in a personal way before you start looking at just crafting good messages.” (source)

“What you need to look at is … as you’re looking through either a passage of Scripture or a topic of interest, ask yourself this first question, ‘Is this a topic that seems compelling to me? Is this something that needs to be said today through me to a local setting?’ ‘On a scale of 1 to 10,’ you could ask yourself, ‘how important is this subject to my congregation, to the people I’m speaking to?’” (source)
