When we hear the word genre in the context of the Bible, we may think of categories like narrative, poetry, and prophecy. In recent decades, however, much work has been done in the area of discourse genre, which has some overlap with these traditional categories, as well as some differences. One of the primary scholars in the area of discourse genre was Robert Longacre, who created a widely used classification schema for discourse genres. For the Longacre Genre Analysis in Logos Bible Software, we placed every Logos pericope into one Longacre’s categories. In addition, we allowed for a secondary categorization where a pericope may have been of a mixed type.
