Overview

The history of the development of Christianity dates of course form the departure of Jesus from the world. But in Paul, this history has a new beginning; from this point we are able to trace it not only in its external features, but also in its inner connection. F.C. Baur traces the rise and development of Christianity through the first three centuries.

Ferdinand Christian Baur (June 21, 1792, Schmiden – December 2, 1860, Tübingen) was a German theologian and leader of the Tübingen school of theology. Following Hegel’s theory of dialectic, Baur argued that 2nd century Christianity represented the synthesis of two opposing theses: Jewish Christianity and Pauline Christianity. In the field of higher criticism, he proposed a late date for the pastoral epistles.
