Overview

This two-volume expositional and inspirational commentary on the book of Matthew integrates rigorous scholarship and clear communication. It will inform and help a wide range of readers--from serious Bible students to interested laypersons--understand and apply the truths found in the text. Both volumes deal with Matthew's emphasis on Jesus as the Messiah or King of Israel.

Topics in volume one, The King and His Kingdom, include:

  • The Coming of the King (1:1-4:25)
  • The Sermon on the Mount (5:1-7:29)
  • The Power of the Kingdom (8:1-10:42)
  • Is Jesus Really God's King? (11:1-12:50)
  • The Parables of the Kingdom (13:1-58)
  • The Withdrawal of the King (14:1-17:27)

Boice not only explains the meaning of the text verse by verse and section by section, he also relates the text's concerns to the world in which we live, the life of the church, and the realities of the Christian life.

“A better word for meek would be gentle, but even this has to be explained. It is the gentleness of love, good manners, self-discipline, and, above all, quietly trusting and submitting oneself to God.” (Page 75)

“3. They were wise enough to worship him when they found him.” (Page 34)

“Chapter 13 contains seven parables, all of which have one theme: the kingdom of God. They are called the ‘parables of the kingdom.’” (Page 231)

“A parable is a story from real life or a real-life situation from which a moral or spiritual truth is drawn” (Page 230)

Dr. Boice's commentary series is a treasure for the church and for her pastors. No expository preacher can afford to be without it.
