Overview

In this commentary on Genesis 12-36, Boice traces the "new beginning" of God's plan of redemption, which arose out of God's relationship with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. By delving into the patriarchs' lives, Boice demonstrates how much they are like us and how easily we relate to them, both in triumphs and failures.

The second of three volumes on the Book of Genesis, A New Beginning shows how God changed the course of history beginning with one less-than-perfect man. It reveals the patriarchs' stories as compelling, dramatic, and true to life. As you study their stories, writes Boice, "I trust that God will use their strengths and weaknesses, victories and failures, to guide you in the true path of discipleship and to strengthen your witness.

“For the truth of the matter is that Abraham’s near sacrifice of his son Isaac is pageant and prophecy of the actual sacrifice by God of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, on Calvary. It shows the love, not the cruelty, of God. Indeed, Genesis 22 is the first passage since Genesis 3:15 in which we are pointed to the love and provision of God for guilty sinners through Christ’s crucifixion.” (Page 683)

“But although we cannot be lawgivers, kings, generals, or prophets, we can be what Abram was—a man who heard God and believed that God can be trusted to do what he says he will do, and who based his entire life on that conviction.” (Page 437)

“Our difficulty is not that we see the circumstances but that we fail to see the whole picture, a picture that includes not only the earthly circumstances but also the God who is the God of circumstances.” (Page 474)

“There are two rather important facts about this call of God to Abram. First, it involved a decisive separation from his past.” (Page 439)

“Abraham was only asked to sacrifice his son; he did not actually have to do it. Even if he had, there was only a physical death involved. But when the time came for God, the heavenly Father, to sacrifice his Son, it was not a mere physical death; it was a spiritual death, one that achieved redemption for sinners. When God’s hand was raised at Calvary, there was no one to call out, ‘Stay your hand. Do not harm the boy.’ When God offered up his sacrifice, the hand that was poised above Christ fell. Jesus died. Through that death, God brought life to all who trust in Christ’s sacrifice. Hallelujah!” (Page 688)

Dr. Boice's commentary series is a treasure for the church and for her pastors. No expository preacher can afford to be without it.
