Commentaries on Luke tend to be big, bulky and not that useful for preachers in that they spend most of their time and energy on source criticism. The standard commentary by a Roman Catholic is the two volume work by Joseph A. Fitzmyer, while the standard work by an evangelical remains that of I. Howard Marshall. Tiede's commentary is smaller but actually better for preachers than these larger works and goes some way in filling the gap in the market for commentaries on Luke. It reflects a Lutheran outlook and is unusually creative and useful, offering penetrating analysis of the text and mature theological reasoning. The reader will find insights which cannot be found in other commentaries. I recommend this work to those who prefer substance to bulk.
