Overview

Of extant commentaries on Ecclesiastes none is so profound as the eight homilies of Gregory of Nyssa, even though they cover only the first three chapters of the book. Joining Gregory among those most frequently excerpted in this volume are Augustine, Ambrose, Gregory the Great, Origen, John Cassian, John Chrysostom, Athanasius, Bede the Venerable and Jerome. Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil the Great and Cyril of Jerusalem lead a cast of other less frequently cited fathers, and then there remains a large cast of supporting players, some of whose work is translated here into English for the first time.

About J. Robert Wright

The academic career of J. Robert Wright includes a Fulbright Scholarship and an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellowship to Oxford, where he earned his doctorate as a member of Wadham College. He served as Instructor in Church History for the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., before coming to General in 1968. Since the summer of 2000, he has served as the official Historiographer of the Episcopal Church and in that capacity he has recently published an essay on “Anglican Slaveholding in Brooklyn in 1819.” His research and teaching include patristic and medieval church history and theology, liturgics, and ecumenical relations. As an Episcopal priest he has served Anglican/Episcopal parishes both in America and in England. He is the author or editor of seventeen books as well as 177 essays and articles. Recent books include Readings for the Daily Office from the Early Church, An Ecumenical Guidebook to the Holy Sepulchre/The Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, and Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. His large volume of translated patristic commentaries on the wisdom literature has now sold nearly 17000 copies. In 1981 he was elected a life Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in London, and he is a past President of the North American Academy of Ecumenists and an elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He now serves as President of the Anglican Society, Theological Consultant to the Ecumenical Office of the Episcopal Church, and Honorary Canon Theologian to the Bishop of New York in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. He has been awarded five Orthodox Patriarchal Crosses and holds four honorary doctorates. He served as coordinator for the General Seminary’s commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer. He has recently co-published an essay on the rediscovery of a major Orthodox treatise against the “filioque” in the Nicene Creed (2049 pages written in Latin). He teaches a course entitled “The Meaning of Icons,” and collects them as well as Books of Common Prayer. Two years ago a large festschrift was published in his honor entitled One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, and he was recently awarded the “Cross of St. Augustine” by the Archbishop of Canterbury in recognition of his scholarly and ecumenical achievements. His most recent publication, A Companion to Bede, a major historical commentary on the Ecclesiastical History of the Venerable Bede, was released by Eerdmans in August, 2008.
