William Cathcart (1826–1908) was raised in a Presbyterian church in Scotland. As a boy, he studied Greek and Latin; later, he attended the University of Glasgow and Horton (now Rawdon) College in England and received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of Lewisburg. He became a Baptist and was ordained as a pastor in the church of Barnsley, near Sheffield, England. He later moved to the United States, where he served as the pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Philadelphia. Cathcart is also the author of The Baptism of the Ages and of the Nations in Classic Studies on Baptism (42 vols.) and The Papal System in the Classic Baptist Books—Roger Williams Heritage Archive.
