Overview

We all know that spending time with God is essential to an intimate, growing relationship with Him. Yet many of us struggle to make prayer a consistent, dedicated part of our daily lives. In Alone with God John MacArthur, Jr. explores the anatomy of effective prayer and presents a biblical model and offers powerful encouragement for anyone longing for a deeper, richer time of prayer. Here MacArthur turns to the perfect mentor on prayer, Jesus Christ, as he explores the profound insights found in the Lord's Prayer.

“Isa. 9:6). Jesus’ life was the perfect manifestation of God’s name.” (Page 58)

“To ‘pray without ceasing’ basically refers to recurring prayer, not nonstop talking. Thus it is to be our way of life—we’re to be continually in an attitude of prayer.” (Page 16)

“Unceasing, incessant prayer is essential to the vitality of a believer’s relationship to the Lord and his ability to function in the world.” (Page 16)

“‘Prayer is beyond any question the highest activity of the human soul. Man is at his greatest and highest when upon his knees he comes face to face with God’” (Page 7)

“Paul urged believers to ‘pray at all times’ (Eph. 6:18) and to ‘devote yourselves to prayer’ (Col. 4:2). Continual, persistent, incessant prayer is an essential part of Christian living and flows out of dependence on God.” (Page 14)

Probably one of MacArthur's shorter books I've read. I've been reading a few books on prayer recently and this one covers some things others tend to do and covers some things others don't. It seems that all prayer books focuses a lot of attention on the Lord's prayer, which is understandable. However, what few cover is the mechanics and some of the deeper questions like what does prayer actually do. MacArthur covers a few of these points (which definitely shows his Calvinism). So in that sense, he covers more of the "difficult" questions but not as intense as I'd like. The book has an Scripture to back up what it is claiming, like any good MacArthur book. Some of his preacher quote picks were a bit off at times and long winded at others. This is one of the better books on prayer I've read in some time that doesn't just go over one to three prayers covered in the Bible. However, I still haven't found a book on the subject that really tackles it fully. Final Grade - B

This is by far the most exciting book on Prayer I have ever read. Exciting, not because of some 10 step plan I should follow to be better in prayer, but excited at how MacArthur has drawn me closer to God's heart to understand why we pray as well. This should be a must read for any Bible study/Fellowship group wanting to be more serious about prayer. And I didn't realise until the end of the book that there is a very helpful study guide included in it as well. Please read this book now! You will not be disappointed

By far the best practical devotional I’ve gone through. What a contrast to the shallow and self centered ones that seem to be popular in mainstream Christianity. MacArthur never disappoints, he may make you rethink a lot but always points you back to the Word.
