Overview

John Newton was a rich and princely teacher, a sensitive and caring pastor, and a straight, outspoken guide. His whole ministry bore the marks so evident in his hymns: it was consistently biblical (to share the Word of God), spiritual (to promote walking with God), simple (to make biblical truth and principles plain) and practical (to inculcate personal holiness and sound relationships in church and society). In this collection, every day bears these marks, so useful to every believer, and so instructive for those called to minister.

“The Lord’s character: God Almighty, or All-sufficient. O who can expound the fullness of this glorious name? Happy are his people who know him in Christ. This name is applicable to all their circumstances.” (Page 202)

“As the law is designed to awaken our fears, so the gospel is sweetly suited to engage our hopes.” (Page 117)

“Present mercies are but earnests of his love, present comforts but foretastes of the joy to which we are hastening. O that crown, that kingdom, that eternal weight of glory! We are travelling home to God. We shall soon see Jesus, and never complain of sin, sorrow, temptation or desertion any more. He has dealt with us according to the estate of a man of high degree. He found us upon the dunghill and has made us companions of princes—in a wilderness and has led us to the city of God.” (Page 13)

“What an awful difference—instead of dominion, misery and confusion. Instead of the moral image of God, the image of Satan full drawn upon the soul. Nothing remains but immortality and capacity—and these constitute our wretchedness, so that if men have no more than sin has left them, they will one day wish they had been dogs or toads to crawl upon the earth awhile and then be for ever forgot.” (Page 27)

“Before anything was made that was made, God was supremely happy and glorious in himself and would have been forever if neither heaven or earth had been created, but when he pleased, he manifested his power in producing creatures to whom and in whom he might communicate and display his goodness.” (Page 15)

John Newton in his day, for all his colorful past, was among those early evangelical clergy whom Sir James Stephen, in a famous phrase, called ‘the second founders of the Church of England.’ Here, from the ripeness of his ministry, his hymns, diaries, letters, sermons, and other writings, Marylynn Rouse offers us a scriptural meditation for every day of the year. No one could have done it better; and no reader who will approach the book with a receptive heart will not be drawn closer to God by the warmth of John Newton's practical Christian counsel and pastoral exposition.

Whilst the “365 Days with Spurgeon” volumes are superior, this was a worthwhile journey with many insights not only into the preaching of John Newton but also into his thought (through extracts from letters and his diary) and his songs. Quite a lot of Scripture passages were repeated, and we do come back to the Transfiguration quite often - and perhaps this is because these areas are where Newton’s preaching was at its strongest... Well worth adding to your daily devotional time.
