Overview

Written by an international team of leading scholars, this volume is a comprehensive exploration of the role and work of the Holy Spirit, as witnessed in both the Old and New Testaments. With contributions by Craig Bartholomew, Gary Burge, James D. G. Dunn, Walter Kaiser, Wonsuk Ma, and Matthias Wenk, among others, this authoritative survey will rapidly establish itself as a standard reference point for scholars and students of all theological persuasions. Any attempt at a “biblical theology” must begin with a careful exegesis of the biblical text. To this end, each contributor address the text through a rigorous exegesis of pertinent passages, keeping in mind the genre, canonical contexts and sweep of redemptive history.

“It is only complete when Jesus finishes his work of bringing new life to the world. Jesus re-creates human life by breathing his Spirit into his followers.” (Page 111)

“the leadership Spirit tradition served as a means to empower and equip the recipient for a specific task” (Page 36)

“The complete term for the Holy Spirit only occurs in its full form in the Hebrew Bible three times” (Page 1)

“The idea of a holistic and transformative effect of the Spirit is integral to this passage, affecting material, land and people with moral, social and communal dimensions, until shalom is reached, the central characteristic of God’s rule. One is able to observe a sense of progression from the transformation of land, transformation of morality, to transformation of community—peace and security.” (Page 42)

“Just as God sent his divine word, and the earth and heavenly bodies were brought into existence (Ps. 33:6, 9) by his word, and as the Holy Spirit overshadowed the virgin Mary, and the incarnate Son of God when he was born into this world (Luke 1:35), so also it was God the Holy Spirit who gave the breath that animated Adam into a living being (Gen. 2:7).” (Page 6)
