About Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483–1546) was a key figure in the Protestant Reformation and one of the most significant figures in Western history. Over the course of his life, he was a monk, a priest, a professor of biblical literature, a Reformer, a husband, and a father.

Luther is most noted for his 95 Theses (1517), in which he argues that indulgences are not acts of penance which can replace true repentance. In 1520, Pope Leo X and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V demanded that Luther retract all of his writings. Luther refused. He was subsequently excommunicated and declared an outlaw.

Luther has been both praised and vilified for what he preached and wrote. His translation of the Christian Bible into the vernacular greatly influenced the church. His works continue to impact all Christians and animate the movement that bears his name. His works are also represented in Martin Luther’s Basic Theological Writings and the Luther’s Works collection.

It's great that Logos is exerting so much effort trying to get Luther's works back into print, and in this digital age they are more likely to stay around a bit longer for future generations to engage with them also. A great service is being done by letting those who are interested in on the thought processes of this giant of a man who has had such a massive influence on the shape and destination of today's world. Even though outside of Christian circles he is not mentioned nearly as often as he should in this regard. However, this comment in the description caught my eye: "Luther was such a prolific writer that few Christians today have read all of his works." Honestly, I'm not sure this is the only reason most Christians have not read Martin Luther today. He had what many Protestants and Evangelicals today would consider Catholic tendencies such as Marian veneration, infant baptism, Eucharist, and more. He was also extremely violent in later life towards all who disagreed with him and actively encouraged the slaughter of Catholics, Anabaptists, Jews and Peasants he deemed worthy of death. His writings against those he deemed enemies are frankly disgusting. He is hailed as a hero of the faith in many popular biographies today and this dark side of his life and temperament is conveniently and sadly left out. I thank Logos that through this and many other works they have released of late, many can finally get a rounded picture of the man Martin Luther.
