Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was a major English Romantic poet, regarded as one of the finest lyric poets in the English language. He was well-provided-for in youth, though he was the subject of much bullying. He attended University College, Oxford, where he barely attended lectures but read extensively and published two collections of poetry while still a student. He married Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein and daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft. His poem Masque of Anarchy represents one of the earliest modern expressions of nonviolent resistance, influencing the likes of Henry David Thoreau and Mahatma Gandhi.
