Overview

In this commentary, author David Campbell identifies the key themes of the book of Galatians. He offers solid exposition and application, making this a useful aid for pastors and teachers, as well as those seeking to understand Galatians and how to incorporate its message to daily life. Written in an encouraging and accessible style, this volume provides necessary questions on themes of false doctrine and salvation for Christians today.

“Like the letter to the Romans, it gives us a very clear answer to that most vital of questions: How, as sinners, can we come to be right with the God against whom we have sinned? Nor does it leave it off before it has answered the related and no less important question: How, having become right with God, are we to progress in our Christian lives?” (Page 12)

“Does the gospel that we are hearing give an exclusive place to grace? Does it send us to God with empty hands that we might receive salvation as a gift? Does it say to us that Christ by his life and death has done it all and that God requires nothing of us? Does it forbid us to try to supplement with our own works the perfectly sufficient work of Christ?” (Page 21)

“This union has brought such a radical death and new life to us that the inevitable upshot is a lifestyle characterized by holiness.” (Page 47)

“How, then, are we to be justified? Paul says, ‘by faith in Jesus Christ’ (Gal. 2:16); ‘… we, too,’ he continues, ‘have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ.’ The right way is as clearly indicated as the wrong. The blessing of justification becomes ours as we abandon all hope of ever being justified by our works and rely wholly upon Christ. We are to look to him and to him alone. As we do so, we are justified. Christ’s perfect righteousness, wrought for us by his sinless life and sacrificial death, is imputed to us: it is put down to our account. And on that basis, God marvellously alters our status as sinners. He pardons all our sins and for ever reckons us, for Christ’s sake, to be as innocent before his law as Christ himself.” (Pages 43–44)

David Campbell opens up this letter in a most attractive and helpful way. His exposition is clear and the applications both challenging and encouraging.
