Overview

What if you were responsible for translating God's Word into a language that never had a Bible before? Can you imagine the burden you would feel to do a good job?

God takes His Word pretty seriously, and you would certainly do everything in your power to make sure that you were not putting words into God's mouth, but that you were providing a text that clearly communicated God's Word as closely to the original as possible.

This challenge to understand the heart of the original Scriptures, in order to put the original text into a new language, was the impetus for the United Bible Societies to create handbooks for Bible translators working on this very thing. The United Bible Societies' Handbook Series is a comprehensive verse-by-verse guide to understanding exactly what is being communicated by the author in the original Scriptures.

Key Features

  • Exegetical, historical, cultural, and linguistic information on the original text
  • Verse-by-verse guides
  • An essential tool for Bible translators

Top Highlights

“Let the Spirit direct your lives should not be understood merely as a kind of ‘permission.’ The imperative form of the Greek text may be translated as ‘live in accordance with the way in which the Spirit tells you to,’ or ‘… the way God’s Spirit directs you.’” (Page 133)

“Obviously, their position is that to be put right with God, it is not enough to have faith in Jesus Christ; one must also obey the regulations in the Law of Moses.” (Page viii)

“In it is no longer I who live, Paul may be saying that under the old system of the Law, the ‘I’ was prominent, it was the ‘I’ that lived. To depend on the Law is to put emphasis on one’s own powers to do what it requires. Instead of that, it is now Christ who lives in him. ‘Christ in me’ is as intimate as the converse expression ‘in Christ.’” (Page 50)

“There is no law against such things as these? What he probably means is that the law just has no part to play in the realm of the Spirit. The law exists for restraint, but there is nothing to restrain in these qualities.” (Page 141)

“To obey the Law in order to win God’s approval is to turn one’s back on God’s gift of sonship. The expression ‘you have fallen away’ should be understood, not in the sense that grace has been taken away from them, but in the sense that they have turned their backs on it (NEB ‘you have fallen out of the domain of God’s grace’; Phps ‘you put yourself outside the range of his grace’). One may also say ‘you have put yourself in a place where God’s goodness cannot find you,’ ‘… where God cannot be good to you,’ or ‘… show you his goodness.’” (Page 122)
