Top Highlights

“The expression ‘God gave them over’ is one that Paul uses three times to mark the downward influence of sin: ‘God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts’ (Romans 1:24), ‘God gave them over to shameful lusts’ (1:26), and ‘God … gave them over to a depraved mind’ (1:28). These three passages reveal the gradually degenerating nature of sin. Sinful desires degenerate into shameful lusts and then further degenerate into a depraved mind.” (Page 47)

“The term life in the Spirit means that (1) we are free from condemnation, (2) we are free from the control of the sinful nature, and (3) we are God’s children. God has adopted us into His family and made us His sons and daughters.” (Page 121)

“Wrath (Greek, orge) is not a sudden emotional outburst of anger against something that has momentarily offended God. Rather, Paul explains, it is a gradual storing up that eventually results in eternal condemnation (Boice 1991). Paul writes, ‘Because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath’ (Romans 2:5).” (Page 45)

“Salvation is a general term that includes justification, sanctification, and glorificationkw. It is the opposite of ‘perishing’ or ‘being lost’ (see Luke 19:10; John 3:16).” (Page 30)

“God works for the good of His people in all things.” (Page 133)
