Overview

Of the number of reprints appearing in recent years this volume is of outstanding importance. Published in German in two volumes, 1875 and 1898 respectively, and later translated into English by Charles E. Hay, it has been out of print in this translation for a number of years. It is an indispensable aid and guide in reference work as well as a textbook for detailed study.

This nine hundred page work contains:

  • Volume I which is devoted to the historical development of doctrine in the Ancient Church, ending with the sixth century.
  • Volume II begins with the "emasculated Augustinianism" of Gregory the Great continues the study through the Middle Ages and the Protestant Reformation, and concludes with a treatment of the completion of doctrinal construction in the Roman Catholic Church, including the dogmas formulated by the Vatican Council of 1869–1870.

Due to its age, it lacks treatment of doctrinal history under the impact of modern philosophical thought and modern science. In so far as it carries the development of dogma however the book is an excellent text.
