I am really grateful to have picked this one up. We are now studying the Sermon on the Mount in small group bible study and this has really opened up the text for me far beyond what was being shared. I understand where the denominational bent in that group is coming from and I had started to unravel what the instructor was getting at prior. I love how he contextualized everything within the book of Matthew (I learned even more about Matthew even though I had just finished a class on it) and went over various interpretations in history. Illuminating and one I know I will come back to again even though I am not quite through with it. The interpretation/explanation of teleios was so spot on. Wonderful.

I haven't explored the whole course yet, but I don't need to to know I want to give this five stars. Firstly, he starts with the context - so important for this topic. I thought it'd be a bit too obvious but it was really helpful being stepped through the 'Literary Typing' function in the Passage Guide and it totally changed how I saw the Beatitudes as he highlighted their apocalyptic nature. It seems obvious but it was a profound realisation for me nonetheless. It's also a skill that will be helpful for further studies. I teach an ethics unit as part of my Year 11 Religion and Society class. It was hard to make the links between Christian ethics and philosophical approaches. I was worried this course would be a rehashing of what I'd already self-taught myself on the topic but it was so incredibly helpful to have a succinct, academic Christian approach to virtue ethics. His thoughtful analysis and comparison of two was even more insightful. I also like that he didn't neglect the threads throughout the whole Bible. It could be easy to dismiss elements of virtue ethics found in the Old Testament since this course is focused on the Sermon on the Mount but briefly recognising Biblical evidence for how God has always been concerned with the heart and motives of His people, reassured readers/listeners and reminded them that Jesus isn't preaching Aristotelian ethics, but rather God's Word :). What had previously felt like more secular coursework, now felt like an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to reveal truth and working upon my heart. I hope my students sensed that too <3 Thank you Dr Pennington! :)

Greatly helped me understand the overall structure of the Sermon on the Mount. Dr Pennington sometimes covers the material a bit too quickly - but with Logos Mobile Ed I usually review to the audio version of the content before I go to bed. Great way to make sure that I don't miss any of the nuggets of gold that Dr Pennington uncovers. Well produced, accessible but still deep. Would like to see an updated version that captures his new content in his book.

I actually took Dr. Pennington's class on the Sermon on the Mount at SBTS and treasure it as one of my favorite courses. From our readings and lectures, I learned many new things I had never noticed in Jesus' Sermon. I would highly recommend this course.
