For hundreds of years Christendom has been blessed with Bible commentaries written by great men of God who were highly respected for their godly walk and their insight into spiritual truth. The Crossway Classic Commentary Series, carefully adapted for maximum understanding and usefulness, presents the very best work on individual Bible books for today's believers. The Gospel of John, called "the spiritual gospel" in early church history, is among the most profound books of the New Testament. A powerful portrayal of the early life and ministry of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, it explores precious tenets of the faith, Christ's nature, His reasons for coming to earth, His determination to fulfill the Father's will by giving His own life for us, the splendor of His miracles, and the supremacy of His love. A helpful volume that will enrich the faith of new and mature Christians alike.

“He lays down three steps, as if saying that he is the beginning, the middle, and the end. From this it follows that we should begin with him, continue in him, and end in him.” (John 14:6)

“for our minds cannot find rest until we embrace God’s unmerited love.” (John 3:16)

“Christ’s purpose in the comparison. There are three main parts. First, we have no power to do good except what comes from himself. Second, we have our root in him, but the Father cultivates us by pruning. Third, he removes unfruitful ‘branches’ so that they can be thrown onto the fire and burned.” (John 15:1)

“Christ means that his death will be like the setting of the sun” (John 9:5)

“Again, why is he not satisfied with a bare refusal, but puts her in the common order of ‘women,’ not even honoring her with the name of ‘mother’? It is certain that this saying of Christ openly warns men not to transfer to Mary what belongs to God by superstitiously exalting the honor of the maternal name in Mary. Christ therefore addresses his mother like this so as to transmit a perpetual and general lesson to all ages, lest any excessive honor paid to his mother should obscure his divine glory.” (John 2:4)

John Calvin

John Calvin (1509–1564), one of the most important thinkers in church history, was a prominent French theologian during the Protestant Reformation and the father of Calvinism. His theological works, biblical commentaries, tracts, treatises, sermons, and letters helped establish the Reformation throughout Europe.

Calvinism has spawned movements and sparked controversy throughout the centuries. Calvin began his work in the church at the age of 12, intending to train for the priesthood. Calvin attended the Collège de la Marche in Paris at 14, before studying law at the University of Orléans and continuing his studies at the University of Bourges.

In 1532, Calvin’s first published work appeared: a commentary on Seneca’s De Clementia. The controversy of calling for reform in the Catholic Church disciplined Calvin in his writing project, and he began working on the first edition of The Institutes of the Christian Religion, which appeared in 1536. Calvin’s Commentaries and The Letters of John Calvin are also influential; both appear in the Calvin 500 Collection.
