Overview

Widely regarded as America’s best theologian, Jonathan Edwards’ influence on evangelical Christianity has endured for more than 250 years. The last of the great Puritan tradition, Edwards’ rigorous study produced a literary body on par with Christianity’s greatest theologians, including Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and John Owen. Today, Edwards’ work is a primary focus of study in the academy and the church.

This collection, one of the earliest attempts to gather together a large library of Edwards’ writings, features some of his most famous treatises, including Freedom of the Will, Religious Affections, and The Last End of God in Creating the World. It also includes his famous biography The Life of David Brainard, his exegetical notes Notes on the Bible, and his multiple volumes—both historical and theoretical—on revival. Finally, this enormous collection also includes two large volumes of Edwards’ most poignant sermons on salient theological topics, featuring all the rigorous logic, sound exegesis, and theological acumen expected of a Puritan scholar.

This product was formerly known as The Writings and Sermons of Jonathan Edwards. The title has since been updated to better match the original works.

About Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) is considered one of America’s greatest theologians. While attending Yale College, he encountered the same Calvinism that had influenced his own Puritan upbringing.

Three years after Edwards was ordained as a minister, the First Great Awakening began in his church, which prompted Edwards to study conversion and revival within the context of Calvinism. During the revival, Edwards preached his most famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” and penned many of his most popular works, including Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God, A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections, and Life and Diary of the Rev. David Brainerd.

In 1757, Edwards reluctantly became president of the College of New Jersey (Princeton University), where he hoped to complete two major works—an expansion of his treatise on the history of redemption and a study of the harmony of the Old and New Testaments. The Works of Jonathan Edwards (26 vols.) is a massive collection containing five decades’ worth of study and scholarship on and from Edwards.

In addition to John's question about how this relates to his 26 volumes, I would like to know how this overlaps with the 2 volume work from Banner of Truth.

There appears to be overlap between this pre-pub and the 26 volume works of Edwards. Is there any new material in the pre-pub that is not in the 26 volume works of Edwards?
