Overview

The author's series on Matthew 5-7, first presented at God's Bible School in Cincinnati in 1907, serves to enlarge our understanding of Jesus' teaching about what His life really means in the believer's experience. For Chambers, the Christian life is authenticated when the indwelling Spirit applies the principles of Christ to the particular circumstances of the believer. Consistent with all his works, the author reminds us in these studies that our focus must be on God alone and not on those among whom we live.

Top Highlights

“The test of discipleship is obedience to the light when these truths are brought to the conscious mind.” (source)

“Beware of placing our Lord as Teacher first instead of Saviour. That tendency is prevalent to-day, and it is a dangerous tendency. We must know Him first as Saviour before His teaching can have any meaning for us, or before it can have any meaning other than that of an ideal which leads to despair.” (source)

“Always trust the originality of the Holy Spirit when He brings a word to your remembrance.” (source)

“The teaching of Jesus Christ comes with astonishing discomfort to begin with, because it is out of all proportion to our natural way of looking at things; but Jesus puts in a new sense of proportion, and slowly we form our way of walking and our conversation on the line of His precepts: Remember that our Lord’s teaching applies only to those who are His disciples.” (source)

“The only right a Christian has is the right to give up his rights.” (source)

Oswald Chambers

Oswald Chambers (1874–1917) was a prominent preacher, writer, and evangelist. He studied at The Art School in South Kensington, the University of Edinburg, and Dunoon Training School.

Chambers served as a YMCA chaplain to British Commonwealth soldiers during World War I. He also worked as a traveling speaker for the League of Prayer and as the main teacher of the Bible Training College. His preaching ministry reached Britain, America, and Japan.

Chambers’ books are mainly compilations of his messages that were transcribed by his wife, Gertrude or “Biddy” as he called her. The daily devotional My Utmost For His Highest was first published in 1927 and continues to be a best-seller. 24 essays and books, including Studies in The Sermon on Mount and Biblical Psychology, can be found in the Oswald Chambers Collection.
