Karl Barth (May 10, 1886–December 10, 1968) was a twentieth-century Swiss theologian in the Reformed tradition. A vigorous opponent of theological liberalism and modernism, he is sometimes called “the Father of Neo-Orthodoxy.”

This is a more recent translation of an older collection of Barth's essays, "The word of God and the word of man". The translation and notes are top-notch, and Prof. Marga is to be commended for the excellence she put into this work. The essays come from the years immediately following the first World War and give good insight into Barth's theological journey during that time, particularly his rift with liberalism. The last essay, "The substance and task of reformed doctrine" is probably the best and most substantive. The rest are of varying interest and quality. This collection is best suited for Barth scholars and die-hard fans (even more so than what I am). Everyone else wanting to learn more about his thought, especially as it matured, would profit much more from reading any 200 pages in his Church Dogmatics. 3.5 stars, rounded down.
