Overview

Learn how the story of Joseph prefigures the gospel. Iain Duguid and Matthew Harmon show that, while Joseph did show exemplary character in the matter of Potiphar’s wife and other situations, he was still far from perfect and ultimately is not intended as a moral example for us to follow. Rather, the Joseph story testifies to God’s electing grace and shows how he redeems and restores broken and dysfunctional sinners to accomplish his purposes.

Top Highlights

“Ultimately, Joseph’s only defense against sin was a heart that wanted to please God more than to experience pleasure or avoid pain.” (Page 52)

“In English, a ‘bad report’ can be either true or false. In Hebrew, however, this particular phrase has the connotations of a false or malicious report.” (Page 4)

“Their repentance paved the way for restoration and reconciliation. Because Judah was willing to suffer for a crime he did not commit, they were all forgiven for the crime that they did commit.” (Page 119)

“But calling Joseph ‘the son of his old age’ links him with Isaac, the child that Sarah bore to Abraham in his old age: the same word is used of Isaac in Genesis 21:2. This suggests that Jacob loved Joseph more than his brothers because he believed that he would be the child that God had promised, the one who would carry on the promised line of the Messiah, the promised seed of the woman of Genesis 3:15.” (Page 6)

“Each of Joseph’s previous misfortunes involved him being stripped of his clothes: his brothers took his fancy coat, and Potiphar’s wife grabbed his outer garment. Here his restoration began with the transformation of his clothing.” (Page 77)

The perfect sequel to Iain Duguid’s explorations of the gospel according to Abraham and according to Isaac and Jacob. In each chapter Duguid and his pastoral colleague Matt Harmon lead us from the study—with strategic insights into each text’s original language, literary artistry, cultural context, and interpersonal dynamics—through the pulpit—with vivid articulation and conscience-searching application to our crooked hearts and broken relationships—to Jesus, whose undeserved suffering on the cross rescues us from destruction, melts our pride, and reconciles the most dysfunctional of families.
