Overview

The decline of the Persian Empire, the rise of Alexander the Great, Israel’s military engagements and religious movements—the events between the final book of the Old Testament and the first Gospel are a backdrop for Christ’s appearance and the development of Christianity. Dr. Craig A. Evans received his PhD in New Testament from Claremont Graduate University and his DHabil from the Karoli Gaspar Reformed University in Budapest. He is the John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins at Houston Baptist University in Texas.
Evans taught at Trinity Western University in British Columbia for 21 years, where he directed the graduate program in biblical studies and founded the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute. He has recently served on the advisory board for the Gospel of Judas for National Geographic Society and has appeared frequently as an expert commentator on network television programs.
Evans has written and edited extensively on the historical Jesus and the Jewish background of the New Testament era. His published works include From Prophecy to Testament: The Function of the Old Testament in the New , Jesus and the Ossuaries, Jesus: The Final Days, and Dictionary of New Testament Background.

This was one of a few courses I picked up on sale. I finally took a couple days to go through it. I found it informative and enjoyable. I have always like Dr. Evan's courses and this one didn't disappoint. I have never studied this time period so this was a good start for me. Is there some repetitive reading...yes. Did it bother me? No, I need to read things a few times to get them in my head. I am glad I grabbed this one and will be referencing it in the future.

A quite good course with basic but quality lectures. I found the lectures interesting, informative and packed with stuff I wanted to know. Curated readings are excellent, though occasionally repetitious. I spent a lot of time in this course and came away with a lot of good,rich knowledge--a great deal of information for a 3 hour course. I recommend this highly.

Not particularly substantive, unfortunately. I would be fine with a series of brief, 5 to 10-minute lectures on subjects like "The History of Rome" or Hasmoneans if (and only if) the course had detailed bibliographies for further reading. As far as I can tell, however, after going through the first half of the course (in about two evenings), I've noted that the large majority of the segments refer only to articles in bible dictionaries (for the most part the Lexham Bible Dictionary). Such a broad survey course really calls for a more interesting and elaborated bibliography..

I did this course in the 2 week Summer Session with Faithlife in 2015. The course itself taught by Dr. Craig Evans was eye opening and I gained a lot of knowledge on the 400 years between testaments. This is about the Intertestamental Period. Many of us are first taught about the period in Bible college or Seminary but it is usually part of a New Testament Survey. This course works in your software and you can do it over and over. Also, there is an entire bundle from Dr. Evans that will also benefit your studies that covers the Dead Sea Scrolls, Targums, and other literature from this time period as well as the New Testament itself. I highly recommend this course from Dr. Evans, as well as his others.
