Overview
This product includes both Greek and English texts of the Acathist Hymn to the Theotokos—one of the most famous hymns of the Eastern Christian tradition. This hymn was authored by the late-fifth century Saint Romanos the Melodist, known especially for his compositions. There are several different akathist hymns (literally “not sitting,” referring to the fact that worshippers stand while this service takes place), but when Orthodox Christians speak of “The Akathist Hymn,” it is typically this one dedicated to the life of the Virgin Mary.

George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848–1934) was an Anglican priest who wrote and translated religious songs and poems. His other published works include Carols for Easter and Ascension-tide, Hymns and Carols for Christmas-tide, Cowley Carol Book, Songs of Syon, Piae Cantiones, A Cambridge Carol Book: Being Fifty-Two Songs for Christmas, Easter, and Other Seasons, and The Most Holy Mother of God: In the Songs of the Eastern Church.
W. J. Birkbeck was an Anglican scholar and historian of the Slavic Christian tradition.
