Overview

For five decades, Dr. Wagner has led the church from one great move of God to the next, riding the wave of the Spirit through changes he never imagined when he first answered God’s call to ministry. In Wrestling with Alligators, Prophets and Theologians, C. Peter Wagner tells his personal story of ongoing transformation. You will get a close-up view of the seismic shifts in the church’s recent history, through the eyes of one of the only people to have seen it all unfold.

“This brought up the difference between the gift and the office of apostle. What is the difference? The gift of apostle is given by the grace of God to those whom He chooses (see 1 Cor. 12:11, 28). Such is not the case with the office. The office is not given by grace; it is awarded by works. The works are the fruit of the gift, exhibited over a period of time in the life and ministry of the apostle. God does not give the office, but rather the Body of Christ, through its appropriate representatives, commissions the apostle on the basis of the fruit that has been observed. The church gives the office.” (Page 209)

“The core difference in these new wineskin churches is clearly the amount of spiritual authority delegated by the Holy Spirit to individuals.” (Page 206)

“The major differences from the other two waves would include the belief that the baptism of the Holy Spirit comes at conversion, that notable experiences after conversion are fillings of the Holy Spirit, that tongues is not a necessary initial evidence of a filling or baptism but is rather a spiritual gift used by some for ministry or prayer language, and willingness to be flexible in any areas that might cause divisiveness in the church.” (Page 136)

“Spiritual mapping involves doing the necessary historical, geographical and spiritual research to identify, as much as possible, the specific demonic entities and forces that are active in keeping a territory or a people group in darkness. This opens the way for more effective and targeted intercession and spiritual warfare.” (Page 170)

Wrestling with Alligators, Prophets and Theologians reveals the unique factor that in my opinion makes Peter a phenomenon: he combines the scholastic discipline of a professor with the rugged individualism of a farm-raised missionary and blends it with the restless intellectual curiosity of youth. Once Peter is convinced of the credibility of a new idea, he becomes the point man in its advocacy, even if it is politically incorrect and costly. His memoirs, like the man himself, are a burning light.

Wrestling with Alligators, Prophets and Theologians reveals the heart of a reformer who has helped shape the destiny of the church. His humor, ability to overcome personal difficulties, and zeal for life will captivate your heart. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about understanding God’s unfolding purpose for his church.
