Overview

On his missionary journeys, Paul heard about the Christians in Rome. He wrote his letter to the Romans to strengthen their faith so that they might help him spread the gospel farther to the west. For over two thousand years, Christians have treasured Romans for its clear and pure presentation of God’s grace to sinners.

Many people have found The People’s Bible to be the most reliable Bible commentary series published. Top Highlights

“The moralist’s approach rests on the principle that people have to lead better lives if their status before God is to improve. His assumption is that he himself knows what is better and that he is doing so. He fancies himself as having more righteousness than others.” (Page 30)

“The accusations of Satan that we should be condemned would carry a great deal of weight in any court of justice—if it were not for three things. Christ Jesus died to pay for those sins; the debt has been canceled. What’s more, the Father has accepted the payment, as proven by the fact that he raised his Son on Easter morning. And third, far from agreeing with Satan that the Father should condemn justified sinners, Christ sits at the Father’s right hand. He has the Father’s full attention, and he is interceding on our behalf. With that kind of attorney pleading our case before a favorable judge, there’s no chance of the case being decided against us or of an unfavorable verdict coming down on us.” (Page 143)

“The connecting link to the previous verse is that no anxiety while we are waiting for judgment day and no gaps in our prayer life—or any other problem, for that matter—can seriously threaten our spiritual status, because we are objects of God’s love, chosen from eternity.” (Page 139)

“No, it was God’s will to curse the earth and have it produce thorns and thistles. In this way it became hard to work and as such served as a constant reminder to Adam and his descendants of the seriousness of their sin (see Genesis 3:17–19).” (Pages 134–135)

“It is important to realize that the word used here for God’s love is agape, the term indicating a one-way, unreciprocated love coming entirely from God.” (Page 82)
