Overview

God sent the prophet Isaiah to his people at a time of great prosperity. But it was also a time of moral and spiritual decay. In the first 39 chapters of his prophecy, Isaiah warns of the coming judgment of God upon his people and upon all nations. Yet these chapters also contain rich and comforting promises of God’s grace and the future arrival of the Messiah.

Many people have found The People’s Bible to be the most reliable Bible commentary series published. It’s the laypeople’s Bible—down to earth, clearly written, easy to read and understand, filled with practical and contemporary applications. The Christ-centered commentary follows the Scripture sections containing explanations of the text, historical background, maps, illustrations, and archaeological information.

The People’s Bible commentaries are great for personal or group study.

Top Highlights

“They were not worthy to be in the presence of the Lord, and their actions revealed their great reverence for him and their great humility in his presence. These powerful and holy creatures considered themselves unworthy to stand with uncovered feet and faces in the presence of God—so great is the holiness of God.” (Page 87)

“But it also had its negative side. The nation God had chosen was not interested in spiritual matters. Oppression, injustice, and a reliance on foreign alliances found places along with religious hypocrisy and formalistic worship among the sins denounced by Isaiah, Micah, Amos, and Hosea.” (Pages 7–8)

“One more thing must be said about the one seated on the throne. He is the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ. After the apostle John quotes from this chapter, he tells us that Isaiah ‘saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him’ (John 12:41).” (Page 89)

“This is a picture of Christ’s gracious rule over his own, the assembly of believers who belong to the Prince of Peace.” (Page 154)

“We are to depend on the Lord and not on human effort, strength, or intelligence. Luther wrote, ‘Therefore learn to trust in God alone and not in man, because man deceives. Either he is unable to help you, though he wants to; or, if he wants to, he cannot. Hence we must not rely on any man, be he ever so good’ (LW, Volume 16, page 253).” (Page 323)
