Top Highlights

“sexual attractiveness is seen as something positive in itself” (Page 130)

“Becoming one flesh is about union, including sexual union. If the focus in Genesis 1 was on being male and female in order to reproduce, the focus here in Genesis 2 is on companionship and oneness. The ancient myth of woman’s creation from man is one of the very early explanations of sexual desire: as the desire to reunite.” (Page 11)

“Its focus is not utilitarian: as if he were to say, becoming one flesh is only legitimate if it is for the sake of bringing children into the world. Rather it emphasises the union and its permanence.” (Page 16)

“The Genesis story became the basis for reflection on marriage. Marriage was seen as the context where sexual intimacy had its proper place.” (Page 12)

“Returning to the account in Genesis, it depicts the re-union of male and female not only as meeting God’s concern” (Page 12)

Here William Loader presents his main conclusions in a highly accessible format. The lucid prose, anchored with references to primary sources, makes it an indispensable resource for students, but scholars will also find much value in the concise overview. . . . Loader is clearly a worldwide leading expert on sexuality in early Judaism and early Christianity, and his command of the material is detectable on every page.
