“But above all, the disciples receive far more frequent special instructions in Matthew than in any other Gospel, and this contradicts the thesis of Barth.40 It means that the disciples often fail to understand, but that they come to understand through Jesus’ explanation (13:51). For Matthew it is important that the disciples do finally—after Jesus’ instruction—understand. That fits 15:16 and 16:9, too, where it is expressly said that the disciples do not yet understand. In each case this is followed by instruction of the disciples intended to remove their lack of understanding. It is then expressly stated at 16:12 and 17:13 that the disciples now understand after this exhaustive instruction by Jesus.” (Page 122)

“‘effective history’ of the biblical texts as synonymous with their ‘reception history.’” (Page 351)
