Gregory the Great, best known as the namesake of the Gregorian chant, was one of the most prolific writers to serve as pope, and the first pope to have come from a monastic background. Called the “last good Pope” by Calvin, Gregory greatly influenced Christian liturgy, and is one of the four original Doctors of the Church.
