A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ (5 vols.)
Overview
This classic set provides a richly detailed look at the world in which Jesus and his disciples walked. It includes essays on the political and religious establishments of the day (both Roman and Jewish), portraits of leading figures, messianic movements, cultural details, and surveys of relevant Jewish and Greek literature, including the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha. Schürer's work covers the centuries preceding and following Christ's life, and is frequently cited today.
The five volumes are broken into two divisions: the first division containing two volumes, the second, three. The First Division covers, "Political History of Palestine, from B.C. 175 to A.D. 135"; the Second Division covers, "The Internal Condition of Palestine, and of the Jewish People, in the Time of Jesus Christ."
All errata noted in the printed edition have been fixed in the Logos edition, so the errata sections have been removed.

Schuerer's history is a classic in the field of the development of Judaism from the intertestamental period to the first century AD, esp. as it developed with the emerging Christian Church. His work is not, strictly speaking, a piece of church history; rather, it is a broad analysis of the religious, political, social, and economic dynamics that shaped both Judaism and Christianity.

As MattGZat noted, this is not the revised edition by Vermes, Millar, et al. The differences between the old version and the revised version are significant. One example: old version -- "Whether pre-Christian Judaism regarded the Messiah as simply human, or as a being of a higher order, and especially whether it attributed to him pre-existence, cannot, with the uncertainty about the dates of authorities, be positively decided." Same section in the new version: "Pre-Christian Judaism -- in so far as its messianic expectations can be conclusively documented -- regarded the Messiah as a fully human individual, a fully royal figure descended from the house of David."MattGZat

Schürer’s History is a fabulous resource BUT the Logos edition has little if any usefulness for scholarly research. 1st their chosen edition is antiquated; 2nd there is no unified index for the 5 volumes-5 indicies need to be examined for subject matter; 3rd current scholarship cites recent editions so it’s a ‘needle in a haystack’ search to find out where the information will be found (under which topic in which of the 5 volumes); and 4th you will have paid $120 for a book that is in no way “a vital resource for the reference library of every student of the New Testament”. Clearly, there is no end to the production of books. But, since we are paying for “the book” it is important – essential? – that the book is accurately described? I have invested significant monies into a resource that is displaying signs of losing perspective: it’s not JUST how many books you can produce-it’s also essential that your reputation for quality is maintained.
