Overview

The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as helper, comforter, counselor, and the one who empowers Christian living. In The New Covenant Ministry of the Holy Spirit, Larry Pettegrew explains how the Holy Spirit’s role in the lives of Christians is at the heart of one of the church’s most difficult and controversial issues. Pettegrew argues that the day of Pentecost changed the Holy Spirit’s role, but identifying how that role changed is a difficult task. The biblical data is puzzling and readers often confuse the Bible’s teaching on the Holy Spirit by isolating individual verses and elevating personal experience over sound biblical doctrine. The New Covenant Ministry of the Holy Spirit provides thorough exegesis in order to build an accurate and meaningful biblical theology of the Holy Spirit. Pettegrew also addresses personal spirituality, discussing the filling, fruit, and gifts of the Holy Spirit.

In the Logos edition, Pettegrew’s volume is enhanced by helpful digital functionality. Perform word studies on interesting words that make it easy to begin unearthing the original New Testament Greek. Find every reference to the Holy Spirit with powerful search tools. “The apostle Paul reinforces this idea in his letter to the Thessalonians when he says that the Spirit’s work of restraining sin will be diminished when the saved are taken out of the world at the Rapture (2 Thess. 2:7).” (Page 73)

“Peter understood that the events of Pentecost were in some way beginning to fulfill the prophecy of Joel” (Page 105)

“that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom” (Page 27)

I have this in paper back. Went to FedEx and had them spiral bind it. This is a fantastic book on the Holy Spirit. Dr. Pettegrew takes a very careful approach, in an effort to draw "out of Scripture" the truth of this often avoided but very important topic. As John MacArthur says in the forward "Not every reader will agree with all of Dr. Pettegrew's positions, but he never fails to give the biblical basis for his views." I really want this digital copy. It is so much easier to take notes onto (margins are always too small on paper books) and using my Logos app where I have my Bible and other resources at my fingertips when studying or teaching Sunday School is very convenient. I hope this get's funded! P.S. I am not a serious theological student--never been to seminary. Understanding the Bible and how to properly interpret what I read (the best I can in my lay-person's understanding), however, is important to me. Because God is everything to me and His word everything to me.

When I first saw the Pre-pub announcement, I thought this would be an interesting addition to my library. After reading the sample pages however, I was very disappointed. It is well presented and logical, but would only suit a serious theological student. It gives me the impression that it is full of the usual intellectual, theoretical, biassed approach of those who are already prejudiced. People hungry for God often come away empty for such reasons. I wonder if this is one reason why many churches are emptying and people walking away.
