Overview

In Historical Theology In-Depth, David Beale explores the doctrines, movements, and heresies that have defined Christianity's history and continue to shape theology today. Volume 1 examines the Greek apologists, the theological traditions of Alexandria and Carthage, the battlefields of the ecumenical councils, and the writings of Irenaeus, Tertullian, Augustine, and others from the first century to the early Reformation. Volume 2 covers the writings of reformers, such as Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, and Calvin; the development of Arminianism and Calvinism; the characteristics of American denominations, with reference to key theological figures in each period; and historical views on specific doctrines and societal issues. This is an excellent introduction to the study of historical theology, providing a comprehensive guide to 2,000 years of doctrine.

  1. Rev. Ken Burkett, Ph.D.
A great review of church history and theology from a solid conservative perspective. Highly recommend.

I just purchased the set from Logos yesterday and have only read the first three chapters. This book appears to be constructed from his classroom lectures in which he presents his subject with depth and he writes with a style that is easy to follow and comprehend. It appears he method is to get us reading historical texts or quotes, which is what i wished someone did for me prior to me talking some theology courses when i was eighteen. As far as decrying the fact of where he taught or he fundamentalist viewpoint .one should considered the viewpoint of the text he is writing about which appears to be quite fundamental in viewpoint. And for those decrying his comments on the effects of so called "christian" writers on the church doctrinal positions, you should keep in mind of their anti Christian bias,

Returned it after reading one chapter--unbelievably biased. I don't have the quote in front of me, but the author said something to the effect of: no one has done more harm to the doctrine of scripture than Karl Barth. I was repulsed by this project's dogmatism.
