Overview

Scottish minister Thomas Chalmers once asked, “What is the most effectual method of making Christianity so to bear upon a population as that it shall reach every door and be brought into contact with all families?” He spent his life striving to answer this question, zealously serving as a minister, working to alleviate poverty, lecturing as chair of moral philosophy at St. Andrews University, and leading the formation of the Free Church of Scotland. Also an advocate of personal devotion, Chalmers modeled this in his own life. His profound love of Scripture is reflected in his carefully recorded thoughts and meditations from his daily readings.

The Posthumous Works of Thomas Chalmers brings together nine volumes encompassing Chalmers’ meditations on Scripture, his sermons, and his university lectures. Read Chalmers’ personal perspectives on the Word, study almost 50 years of his sermons, and explore his teachings on ethics, natural theology, and the doctrine of the Spirit. These works provide an authentic portrait of Chalmers, reflecting both his private and public life.

The two volume Sabbath Scripture Readings are one of the best devotionals ever made. This was one of Spurgeon’s favorite devotionals, and in my opinion is better than his own Morning and Evening. He would probably agree.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon says of Thomas Chalmers, "Those acquainted with the writings of Chalmers will know what to expect from his pen when guided by fervent devotion."
