Overview

Originally published as The German Lazurus, this text is an account of the visions that Lutheran layman John (Johann) Engelbrecht experienced in seventeenth-century Germany. In 1622, only 23 years old and at the point of death, Engelbrecht experienced the first set of visions, of heaven and hell. In this volume, he describes these visions in stunning detail, writing about the experience with awe and meticulous attention to particulars. Engelbrecht documents a number of later divine visions in this volume as well, recounting with great drama and imagery the sight of new heaven, new earth, and much more.
