Overview

Old Testament Textual Criticism provides the basic knowledge for students to get the most from Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia.

Dr. Ellis Brotzman explains the significance of scripts and writings of the ancient Near East, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Hebrew manuscripts for students of Hebrew exegesis. Students are lead through the steps involved in using BHS and other resources to evaluate variant readings. Brotzman sheds light on the origin and nature of Hebrew texts and versions, thereby helping scholars, students, and pastors more fully understand the Old Testament.

—Richard Taylor, Dallas Theological Seminary

The first half of this book is an excellent general introduction to the text of the Old Testament, its history and transmission. … The second half of the book is for those with at least a year of Hebrew under their belts. … Brotzman, with his gift for illustrations and simplification, is an excellent place for the intermediate student to begin.

This book was very much worth the investment. Having some knowledge of New Testament textual criticism, this book greatly expanded my understanding of the very different situation that the OT lives in. Moreover, the implication that the Bible is inspired is very refreshing, and sets this book apart from other Old Testament works I've encountered. My only criticism is that it could have gone into more detail concerning the Aleppo Codex vs. Leningrad Codex. KJV onlyism is usually thought to be an issue in NT textual criticism, but the KJV onlyists rejection of the third edition of Biblia Hebraica makes it clear that OT textual criticism should address the issue. It is brought up, mind you, but not in enough detail in my opinion. Still, this is a great work, and easily worth it for every student of the Hebrew Bible to add to their collection.

It`s very practical and useful book to beginner for textual criticism. It`s detail of procession of it from the transcript`s origin of the old testament to practicing how doing criticism by BHS. You may feel so kind. An inconvenience is that this don`t reflect explanation of transcripts by Swede, Lexham, but Ralfph .etc. In this book you can get whole processing Ruth.
