Overview

First published in 1933 immediately following Greece’s national independence, The History of the Greek Revolution is Thomas Gordon’s two-volume description and analysis of the 1821–1832 Greek War of Independence. Written with firsthand familiarity of the land, people, and politics of the time, the account is acclaimed for its great detail and accuracy.

Volume one begins with an introduction that describes Greek history from antiquity to the March 25, 1821 declaration of independence. The subsequent 12 chapters describe rebellions in Macedonia, Peloponnese, Epirus, and other regions; effects the revolution produced in the minds of the Turkish people; massacres and executions perpetrated by both sides; the capture of Tripolizza; the establishment of a central Greek government; and European reactions to the war. Volume two describes naval campaigns, Greek internal affairs (including civil wars), European mediation attempts, and sieges upon Athens.

Over the span of the conflicts, Gordon served in the Greek military in several leadership roles. His proximity to the subject of his writing, coupled with a fair analysis of both sides of the conflict, makes The History of the Greek Revolution an invaluable resource for anyone studying this significant period of Greek history.
