Overview

The Faith of Catholics is a carefully assembled justification of Catholic beliefs and practices. Joseph Berington and John Kirk use the pillars of the Church to break down the walls between the Reformed Church and the Old Church. This text brings together the teachings of the first five centuries of Catholicism, interwoven with Scripture to represent the historical consistency of the Church. Packed with cited references to some of the earliest Catholic writings, these texts provide an excellent examination of the foundations of the Catholic Church.

With the Verbum edition, Scripture references appear in your favorite translations with mouseover. If your library contains works that include writings by the Church Fathers, citations and references within The Faith of Catholics can instantly link you to the texts Berington and Kirk spent years studying. Read The Faith of Catholics on your laptop or mobile device to bring this powerful resource with you wherever you go.

“The good works of a just man, proceeding from grace and charity, are so far acceptable to God, through His goodness and sacred promises, as to be truly deserving of an eternal reward; ‘God crowning His own gifts, when He crowns the good works of His servants.’” (Volume 1, Page 3)

“a teacher of spiritual things, let him be, with the utmost zeal, a cultivator of equality and unity” (Volume 1, Page 183)

“The merits of Jesus Christ, though infinite in themselves are not applied to us, without a right faith in Him; which faith is one, entire, and conformable to its object; which object is Divine Revelation, that is, the truths taught by Christ; and to that revelation, or to those truths, Faith gives an undoubting assent.” (Volume 1, Page 7)

“Certainly, the other Apostles also were what Peter was” (Volume 2, Page 10)

“The security which a Catholic, well instructed, experiences in the profession of his belief, resting on the teaching authority established by Christ, must be esteemed a signal blessing.” (Volume 1, Page xxi)

Joseph Berington (1743–1827) is noted as an upstanding priest who cared tremendously for the poor. He served for a time as the chair of philosophy at the English College at Douai. As a writer, Berington was surprisingly liberal, and as a person, he was respected by both Catholics and Protestants. A slab stands in memory of him in the Protestant church at Buckland.

John Kirk (1760–1851) was an avid writer and respected priest, said to have been “methodical, dignified [and] devout.” He contributed to a number of works, including the continuation of Church History of England, Biographies of English Catholics in the Eighteenth Century and an edition of the 1680 Roman Catholic Principles. Kirk was also president of Sedgley Park School, a Roman Catholic Academy.
