Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health

NavPress 2001

Runs on Windows, Mac and mobile.

If you’re like many Christians who desire a deeper walk with Christ, you’re probably pursuing activities geared to help you grow. But, like many believers, you may wonder if you’re really making progress. You’re spiritually active, but are you spiritually healthy? Would Jesus look at your endeavors (prayer, church attendance, evangelism, Bible study, etc.) and pronounce you spiritually fit? Or does he have an altogether different set of criteria by which he measures your spiritual well-being?

Best-selling author Don Whitney is no stranger to activities and disciplines designed to move believers toward a deeper relationship with Jesus. But the 10 probing questions Whitney poses in this book will help you look beyond your spiritual activity to assess the true state of your spiritual health. His questions cut to the heart of the matter: Is your character becoming more like Christ’s?

Are you spiritually healthy, or just spiritually busy? Don Whitney will help you ask yourself the right questions for evaluating your growth in the areas that really matter.

The Logos Bible Software edition of this volume is designed to encourage and stimulate your study and understanding of spiritual disciplines. Scripture passages link directly to your English translations and to the original language texts, and important concepts link to dictionaries, encyclopedias, and a wealth of other resources in your digital library. In addition, you can perform powerful searches by topic and find what other authors, scholars, and theologians have to say about faith, meditation, and Christlikeness.

Praise for the Print Edition

Donald Whitney is an experienced physician of the soul. Now he has given us an excellent diagnostic tool for evaluating our spiritual health. I highly recommend this book.

Jerry Bridges, author, speaker, staff member of The Navigators

Many of us would relish the privilege of having a godly, mature mentor help us to examine our spiritual condition. Don Whitney’s book gave me that sense. He asks the questions, identifies the issues, and stirs mind and heart toward purer devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ.

—Jean Fleming, author

The practice of spiritual disciplines is vital, especially when we are frequently shocked to hear of some who did run well but have fallen.

—Erroll Hulse, editor, Reformation Today

Whether we consider our spiritual health to be robust or weak, Don Whitney’s leadership through this self-diagnosis will almost inevitably move you to a higher spiritual plane. Whitney has given us several excellent books on the spiritual disciplines, but I believe this is the most helpful of his books to date. I personally felt my yearning for God intensify and then found expression in tangible growth as I applied Whitney’s tests and comments to my own spiritual life. I commend it highly to all sincere Christian seekers.

—T. W. Hunt, former prayer specialist, LifeWay Christian Resources

Donald Whitney asks us to interrogate our hearts before evaluating our actions to assess the health of our souls. However, the questions he supplies for this assessment not only help us examine our spiritual health, but in profound ways impart divine nutrition to all who dare to ask what he suggests.

Bryan Chapell, president, Covenant Theological Seminary

Don Whitney has done it again! After already giving me three of the books I most frequently recommend to others, I think he’s given me a fourth! This book poses the questions we need to ponder if we’re to persevere in following Christ.

Mark Dever, pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church

Vance Havner, in his book Repent or Else, states that just as we are often too busy for a spiritual checkup, so the church is often too occupied to submit to a spiritual examination. In Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health, Dr. Whitney has given us something to do just that. This is not a book you read only once. For believers who long for revival, these are questions to which we’ll regularly return. What a tool to prepare the hearts of a congregation for the Lord’s Supper, or, Solemn Assemblies!

—Ron Owens, worship consultant, International Mission Board
