Overview

Recognized as a modern spiritual classic this sublime and practical study, perhaps Dietrich von Hildebrand’s greatest work, gives a penetrating analysis of the true path to holiness for those who love Christ. The first requisite is the person’s desire for change; with that fundamental attitude in mind, von Hildebrand devotes a chapter to each of the successive spiritual attitudes necessary for those who strive for Christian perfection. The Beatitudes are treated with beauty and depth—a challenge to every serious Christian to put these teachings into practice.

Top Highlights

“‘WE MUST have an unconditional readiness to change in order to be transformed in Christ.’ These are the very first words I heard from Dietrich von Hildebrand, the man who was later to become my husband.” (Page vii)

“Even though I had been raised a Catholic, I had never been concretely taught how to relate my beliefs to everyday life. There was something sadly lacking in my education: it is not enough for us to believe; we must know how to live our beliefs.” (Page vii)

“True penitence involves, furthermore, a burning desire not only for forgiveness of the guilt of sin but for purification and sanctification, as well as the belief in their accomplishment by the grace of God.” (Page 38)

“GOD has called upon us to become new men in Christ. In holy Baptism, He communicates a new supernatural life to us; He allows us to participate in His holy life. This new life is not destined merely to repose as a secret in the hidden depths of our souls; rather it should work out in a transformation of our entire personality.” (Page xix)

“It may be said without exaggeration that the degree of our inner fluidity in relation to Christ, our readiness to put off our own nature in order to put on Christ, constitutes the standard criterion of our religious progress.” (Page 16)

A magnificent treatise by a distinguished philosopher on the pursuit of spiritual perfection.

Dietrich von Hildebrand (October 12, 1889 – January 26, 1977) was a German Catholic philosopher and theologian who was called (informally) by Pope Pius XII “the 20th Century Doctor of the Church. ” Pope John Paul II greatly admired the work of von Hildebrand, remarking once to von Hildebrand’s widow, Alice von Hildebrand, “Your husband is one of the great ethicists of the twentieth century.
