Overview

What is it that compels a group of people to follow the leadership and vision of one person? Why are the insights and pursuits of certain individuals more persuasive than those of others?

In this book, Jerry Wragg investigates how leadership should be characterized in the church, and how biblical leadership must differ from the kind of leadership promoted in the world. He explores the dynamics of leadership, particularly the character traits that need to be built up or eradicated in leaders, the dangers that leaders face and temptations to which they are particularly prone, and the development of future leaders: how to recognize leadership potential and encourage leadership gifts in the next generation. Throughout, Jerry Wragg writes honestly and offers pastoral encouragement and practical guidance that will help all men placed in church leadership positions.

Top Highlights

“I’m convinced that at the heart of an ability to influence others is a compelling life of fearless conviction and a transcendent, divine message. A man who lives in the fear of God and boldly speaks his truth to the world is the kind of leader God promises to bless (Isa. 66:2).” (Page 12)

“I believe we must return to the throne of grace and plead with God to raise up a mighty generation of churchmen who will lead his people out of the cultural desert and into abundance.” (Page 16)

“The straightforward truth of Scripture is able both to open blind eyes and transform the heart (Ps. 19:7–11). Supernatural discernment comes from a mind saturated with truth (Ps. 119:97–104). It brings clarity to flaws, liberates the conscience (James 1:25), uncovers the deepest issues of the inner man (Heb. 4:12), and fully equips the believer for a life of pleasing God (2 Tim. 3:16–17). Many leadership models today have utterly abandoned a simple trust in the work of the Holy Spirit to bring effective spiritual influence, and the results have been disastrous!” (Pages 17–18)

“In other words, true spiritual leadership is all about service, humility, and self-sacrifice. ‘The greatest among you shall be your servant’ (Matt. 23:11).” (Page 9)

“The goal of all spiritual privilege is the display and magnification of God’s glory (1 Cor. 10:31), therefore the measure of effective leadership is grounded in the progress of sanctification, first for leaders, then for those they influence.” (Page 21)

Jerry Wragg is uniquely qualified to write a book titled Exemplary Spiritual Leadership. He is both a capable teacher and a natural leader, committed to Jesus’ pattern of humility and self-sacrifice as the only viable model of church leadership. This book is a refreshing, readable study of what it means to be a godly leader. Since practically all Christians have a calling to leadership at one level or another (Hebrews 5:12), every Christian will find this book a profitable study and an encouraging, practical resource—one you will return to again and again.

John MacArthur, pastor-teacher, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California

Jerry Wragg has hit the nail on the proverbial head. Such a topic could not be taught by a better man. I revel in the fact that this work is now in print as I am able to personally testify of Wragg’s knowledge and practice of this material in my own life for many years. In a world where the topic is in vogue and yet the need still so clearly seen, Wragg points the compass towards true north and shows us how to think about and practice leadership. I cannot commend the man or the message strongly enough.

—Eric Bancroft, senior pastor, Castleview Baptist Church, USA

Jerry Wragg was born and raised in California, and was exposed to Christian training through his parents’ example and his own involvement in church. He didn’t come to faith in Christ, however, until after he was married and serving in the United State Air Force. After his discharge from the service, he graduated from The Masters Seminary and served as an associate pastor and personal assistant to Dr. John MacArthur at Grace Community Church in California. In 2001, he accepted the call as pastor-teacher at Grace Immanuel Bible Church in Jupiter, Florida, where he continues to minister at present. Over the years he has taught on church leadership, biblical counseling, theology and Bible survey courses, marriage and family, and parenting. In addition, Jerry serves as a board chairman for The Expositors Seminary in Jupiter, Florida.
